TWENTY-THREE

Kimmie

“Why is this happening to me?” I moaned into the pillow.

“Yeah, this is weird.” Alicia stood next to my bed. Hana had gotten a room in the same hotel, but she was on another floor.

It was our first night in New York City and Hana had taken us to Times Square. Alicia and I had gawked at all the lights and buildings and the Broadway shows. Mila had met up with us since she lived close by in Hell’s Kitchen.

She’d given me a big hug when she saw me. “I had no idea My Crafty Bao is your shop. I love it.”

“Thanks for keeping our secret.” I’d told her why we were in Manhattan. She didn’t know Alicia, since Alicia hadn’t gone to our school and didn’t live in town.

“You two will crush it at the meeting tomorrow.” Mila looked back and forth between me and Alicia. “And if you do work with Endless, I’ll show you around New York City whenever you’re here.”

“Thanks.” I was surprised by how much fun I’d had with Mila tonight. Maybe I should have given her more of a chance back in high school. When she hugged me good-bye, I’d asked her, “Are you okay? You don’t look good.”

I wasn’t trying to be rude, but Mila looked really tired and had dark circles under her eyes. She’d sighed and said, “I’m just down these days. I haven’t gotten a part lately even with all the auditions I’ve been going on. I love to dance, but I hate the cattle calls and the backstabbing in the dance world.” She’d waved a hand in the air. “But it’s fine!”

I’d made a note to talk to Mila more. Alicia and I were now back in our hotel room. We should have met Matt by now and he should have known who I really was. But the universe seemed hell-bent on keeping the truth from him.

“Why can’t I just tell him already?” I said. “What’s going on?” My face was still buried in my pillow so my voice came out muffled.

Alicia sat on my bed and leaned over to wrap an arm around me. “It’s going to be okay. I feel it. Everything will be out tomorrow and it’ll be fine.”

I turned to look at her. “How do you know? I have this bad feeling in my stomach, like everything’s about to blow up in my face. Matt, Endless, New York.”

Alicia stared at me and then pulled me up by the hand. “You are not going to stay here and wallow on your first night in New York City. We’re going to go down and have a drink at the hotel bar and pretend we’re sophisticated New Yorkers. And celebrate the fact that you finally left Oklahoma after all these years.”

I smiled, a burst of pride going off in my chest. I’d been a champ at the airport and on the flight, no panic attack at all. It’d been easy with Alicia and Hana at my side. “Yeah. That sounds nice.
